Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty

Date: September 30, 2017 to February 4, 2018,
Venue: Wichita Art Museum - 1400 W. Museum Blvd., Wichita

The Event:

The name Irving Penn (1917-2009) is synonymous with stunning photography. Penn, who ranks as one of the foremost photographers of the 20th century, is celebrated for his iconic fashion, portrait, and still life images. Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty highlights the artist’s legacy as a modern master and reveals the full expressive range of his work. The exhibition features 146 photographs from all stages of Penn’s career—street scenes from the late 1930s, photographs of the American South from the early 1940s, celebrity portraits, fashion photographs, still lifes, and private studio images. He was a master of both black-and-white and color photography, matching his subject matter to his print process. It is the artist’s masterful combination of picture and process that bridged the chasm separating magazine and fine art photography. Image: Irving Penn, Lips (for L'Oreal, 1986, printed 1992.
