Musical - "Nice Work If You Can Get It"

Date: July 7, 2018, 3:00 PM
Venue: Sterling High School Theatre - 308 East Washington, Sterling, KS, 67579
Sponsor: Sterling Community Theatre Troupe

The Event:

New Broadway “Classic” Slated for Sterling’s Fourth of July Celebration - What Broadway musical has songs that are almost a century old, a loose plot that is pure screwball comedy, is set in the Roaring 1920’s and is filled with chorus girls and gangsters? It could be any one of several Broadway musicals from the 1920s but this show is actually only six years old. The answer is “Nice Work If You Can Get It” which is billed as “The New Gershwin Musical” and will be presented by the Sterling Community Theatre Troupe to close that community’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. This high-stepping Broadway musical recalls the golden age of American musicals, complete with extravagant dance numbers, glittering Broadway costumes and a treasure trove of George and Ira Gershwin’s most beloved songs, including “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “S’Wonderful,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” plus the romantic title tune and many more. Contemporary playwright Joe DiPetro based the book of the new musical on the Gershwin’s 1926 musical “Oh, Kay!” The “new” Gershwin musical was staged at Music Theatre Wichita two years ago but has not been seen in the region otherwise. A 22-person cast including community, high school and college age performers will bring the new “classic” Broadway show to life in Sterling. “Nice Work If You Can Get It” will be staged for four performances as part of Sterling’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebration on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 5, 6 and 7 at 7:30 pm and a special matinee on Saturday, July 7 at 3:00 pm, all in the Sterling High School Theatre. Tickets will be available at the door before each performance. -END-
