2019 Sunflower Biennial Artist Noah Wellbrock-Talley

Date: March 20, 2019, 12:00 PM
Venue: Salina Art Center - 242 S Santa Fe
Sponsor: Salina Art Center

The Event:

The Salina Art Center presents the inaugural Sunflower Biennial: Contemporary Art by Emerging Young Kansas Artists Feb. 27 through March 31, 2019 in the main galleries in downtown Salina. The inaugural Sunflower Biennial is a descendant of the Salina Art Center’s popular Gerry Neustrom Youth Challenge. The latter, organized annually from 1993 to 2010, was displayed at Salina’s Central Mall and showcased work by high school juniors and seniors from central and northwest Kansas. Fr. Willys Neustrom established the competitive exhibition to honor the memory of his late wife, Gerry. The 2019 Sunflower Biennial is a response to the Salina community’s desire for the return of a platform to celebrate the accomplishments of our young artists. Like the Neustrom exhibition, the Sunflower Biennial is adjudicated by a professional artist or arts educator working within the region. The range of artists eligible for consideration has been expanded to include secondary and post-secondary students from across the entire state. This year’s exhibition includes 57 works of art by 43 artists, representing 21 communities and 14 secondary and post-secondary schools throughout Kansas. Special programming includes: Wednesday, March 20, 2019 from 12-1pm, join Sunflower Biennial artist and Fort Hays State University student, Noah Wellbrock-Talley, and learn more about his work, college experiences and advice to young artists. Bring a sack lunch. This event is free and open to everyone. 242 S. Santa Fe, Salina For a complete checklist of artists selected to participate in the Sunflower Biennial and more information about programming, visit or follow us on social media.
